How to Rank on Google Maps in Gurgaon (Gurugram): A Local SEO Checklist

Google Maps local results for a business in Gurugram

To rank on Google Maps in Gurgaon, verify a Google Business Profile at a real, staffed address, choose the most accurate primary category, and keep your name, address, phone and hours identical everywhere. Google ranks local results mainly on relevance, distance and prominence, so earn steady genuine reviews, add real photos and posts, and link a matching Gurugram page on your website.

When someone in Gurugram searches for a dentist, a salon or a web designer, the map results are often the first thing they see, before any website. If your business isn't there, the customer usually picks someone who is.

I'm Lokendra Singh, and I founded Aukark in DLF Phase 2 in November 2020. We run local SEO work from here, and we manage our own Google Business Profiles for our offices in DLF Phase 2, on Golf Course Road and in Kharadi, Pune. This guide is the checklist I'd give a Gurugram business owner who wants to fix things themselves. Everything about how Google works is taken from Google's own help pages, linked below, rather than from rumours or ranking "hacks".

How Google decides who ranks on Maps

Google's help page Tips to improve your local ranking on Google explains that local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and popularity, and then describes the three factors like this:

  • Relevance: how well your Business Profile matches what someone is searching for. Complete, detailed business information helps Google understand what you do.
  • Distance: how far your business is from the person searching, or from the location Google infers if they don't share one.
  • Prominence: how well-known your business is. Google says this draws on information such as how many websites link to your business and how many reviews you have, and that more reviews and positive ratings can help.

The same page is clear that there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. That matters when someone offers to "guarantee" a map position.

Distance is the factor you can't control, and it explains a lot. Someone searching from Sector 54 on Golf Course Road and someone searching from DLF Phase 3 can see different businesses for the same query, simply because they're standing in different places. So when you check your ranking, check from more than one spot, and don't panic if you rank well near your office and less well across the city.

Everything below works on the two factors you can influence: relevance and prominence.

Step 1: Set up and verify your Google Business Profile correctly

Google's local ranking page lists verification first, because it tells Google you are authorised to represent the business. Start there, then get the basics exactly right.

Use your real business name only

Google's Guidelines for representing your business say your name should reflect your real-world name, as used on your storefront, website and stationery. The guidelines list things your name must not include, such as marketing taglines, service or product information, location information, and phone numbers or URLs. Including unnecessary information can result in suspension.

Why "Website Designer in Gurgaon" as a name can get you suspended: a name like that is not a real brand; it's a list of keywords. It adds service and location information to the name field, which the guidelines don't allow. It may seem to work for a while, but it can be reported and edited, and the profile risks suspension. Your category, services and description are where "what you do" and "where" belong.

Address vs service area

If customers visit you, show your address. If you travel to customers and don't serve them at your address, Google's guidelines say you should be a service-area business and hide the address. Some businesses are hybrids: they have a storefront and also serve customers at their locations.

The guidelines are strict about what counts as a real location. A virtual office (a rented address you don't operate from) isn't eligible. A co-working desk only qualifies if it has clear signage, receives customers during business hours and is staffed by your team during those hours. You should have one profile per real, staffed location, and not more than one profile for each location.

Accurate hours, including holiday hours

Google asks for your regular customer-facing hours, and lets you set special hours for particular days. In Gurugram, that means updating your profile before days like Gandhi Jayanti or Diwali if you close or change timings. Only use "Open 24 hours" if it is genuinely true. A customer who drives to a closed shutter doesn't come back, and they may leave a review about it.

Step 2: Pick the right categories

Your primary category is one of the strongest signals of what your business is. Google's guidelines say to use as few categories as possible to describe your core business, to choose categories that are as specific as possible, and not to use categories as keywords. A good test from the guidelines: the category should complete the sentence "This business IS a…", not "this business HAS a…".

To see what works in your market, search your main service on Google Maps and look at the category shown under each business name in the top results. For example, when we checked "website design company in Gurugram" on 28 September 2026, every top result we saw used "Website designer" as its primary category. That is one check on one day, not a rule, but it shows how to read your own market.

Add secondary categories only where they are true. If you have more than one location with a different focus, the primary category can differ too. Aukark's DLF Phase 2 profile uses "Website designer", while our Golf Course Road profile, which focuses on app development, uses "Software company".

Step 3: Gurgaon or Gurugram? Use both correctly

The Haryana government formally renamed Gurgaon city as Gurugram through a notification in November 2016, as the Times of India reported on 5 November 2016. People still search with both names, and many businesses still use "Gurgaon" in everyday speech.

My advice:

  • In your Business Profile address, use "Gurugram", the official name.
  • On your website, mention both names naturally, for example "Gurgaon (Gurugram)" in a heading or the first paragraph.
  • Don't create two separate pages, one for each spelling. That splits your signals and looks like duplicate content.

Step 4: Build a steady flow of genuine reviews

Reviews feed prominence, and they help people choose you once they've found you. The aim is a steady flow of real reviews, not a burst.

  • Ask every happy customer at the right moment: after a successful delivery, a finished treatment or a project sign-off. A short review link or a QR code at the counter makes it easy.
  • Reply to every review personally, good or bad. Google's local ranking page says replies show you value feedback.
  • No incentives and no gating. Google's prohibited and restricted content policy says merchants must not offer incentives such as payment, discounts or free goods or services for reviews, must not discourage negative reviews or selectively ask only happy customers, and must not ask for specific content to be included. Fake or incentivised reviews can be removed.

Keep keywords out of your replies too. Here is an illustrative example (fictional):

> Keyword-stuffed reply: "Thanks for choosing us, the best website design company in Gurgaon for website designing in Gurugram and SEO services in Gurgaon!" > > Natural reply: "Thank you, Priya. It was a pleasure working on your clinic's new booking page. Glad the launch went smoothly, and do call us if you need any changes."

The second reply reads like a person, it's specific, and it gives the next customer a reason to trust you.

Step 5: Photos, posts, products and services

Use real photos: the exterior with your signage (which also helps people find the door), the interior, your team and your work. Stock images tell customers nothing.

Post updates regularly, such as new services, recent work or holiday timings, and fill in the Services list and, where available, Products with clear descriptions. I don't claim this boosts your ranking by any particular amount. What it does is make your profile more complete and relevant, which Google says helps, and it gives customers more reasons to call you rather than the next listing.

Step 6: Make your website back up your profile

Your website should confirm everything your profile says.

  • Create a Gurugram location page with exactly the same name, address and phone as the profile, an embedded map, and LocalBusiness schema markup.
  • Point your profile's website link to that location page rather than the homepage, and add UTM tags to the link so visits from Maps show up separately in Google Analytics.
  • If you have more than one office, give each one its own page.

As an example of the format, Aukark's Gurugram headquarters page and Golf Course Road page each carry that office's full address, phone number and a map link, one page per office.

Step 7: Consistent listings (citations) across India directories

Your business probably appears on directories such as Justdial, Sulekha and IndiaMART, as well as Bing Places and Apple Business Connect. Some of these listings may have been created automatically, years ago.

  • Write one standard NAP block (name, address, phone) and use it everywhere, character for character.
  • Search for your business name and old phone numbers or addresses to find outdated listings.
  • Claim the listings you can and correct them, especially after a move or a number change.

The point isn't that any single directory moves your map ranking. It's that consistent information everywhere helps Google, and customers, trust that your details are right.

Step 8: Track what's working

  • Business Profile performance: calls, direction requests and website clicks from your profile.
  • Google Analytics 4: visits from your UTM-tagged profile link.
  • Search Console: impressions and clicks for your location page.
  • Manual checks: search your main terms on your phone from a few different parts of Gurugram, and note the results over time.

Don't use fake-location tricks or tools that spoof your position; measure what real customers see.

Mistakes that get Gurugram profiles suspended or buried

  • Keyword-stuffed business names.
  • Virtual offices, or co-working addresses without signage and staff.
  • Duplicate profiles for the same location.
  • Fake, paid or incentivised reviews.
  • Wrong hours, or "Open 24 hours" when you aren't.
  • Frequent edits to your name or address.

What I've learned running our own profiles

Aukark has three verified Google Business Profiles, for DLF Phase 2, Golf Course Road and Kharadi in Pune, and all three are rated 5.0 at the time of writing. Each office has its own profile and its own page on our site, and each profile's primary category reflects what that office focuses on rather than one keyword repeated three times. I'd rather you judge us on those profiles than on anything we say here.

When to hire help

Most of this checklist is work you can do yourself if you have a few hours and the patience to be consistent. Hiring help makes sense when you have several locations, when your profile has been suspended or merged, when directory listings are badly out of date, or when you'd rather spend your time running the business. There's no single public fee for this work; the scope depends on how many locations you have and what needs fixing. You can see how we approach it on our local SEO and Google Maps optimisation page, and for paid local visibility alongside it, our Google Ads management service.

FAQs

How long does it take to rank on Google Maps in Gurgaon?

There's no fixed timeline. It depends on how competitive your category is in your part of Gurugram, how complete your profile already is, and how consistent your reviews, photos and listings are. Correcting wrong information is usually the quickest win. Be wary of anyone who promises a specific position by a specific date, because Google says rankings can't be bought or requested.

Do I need a physical office to appear on Google Maps?

No. If you travel to customers, you can set up a service-area profile and hide your address. But Google's guidelines don't allow virtual offices, and a co-working address only qualifies if it has clear signage, receives customers and is staffed by your team during business hours. Your profile must reflect a real, precise address or service area.

Why do competitors with fewer reviews rank above me?

Because reviews are only part of prominence, and prominence is only one of three factors. A competitor may be closer to the person searching, have a more accurate primary category, or have a more complete profile and better-linked website. Check their category and profile details on Maps, and work on relevance as well as reviews.

Should I write "Gurgaon" or "Gurugram"?

Both, in the right places. Use "Gurugram", the official name since 2016, in your Business Profile address. On your website, mention both names naturally, such as "Gurgaon (Gurugram)". Don't create separate pages for each spelling, because that splits your content and signals.

Can I add keywords to my business name?

No. Google's guidelines say your name should match your real-world name, and must not include service, product or location information. Adding keywords can lead to your profile being edited or suspended. Put what you do in your categories, services and description, and put where you are in your address or service area.

Is it okay to buy or incentivise reviews?

No. Google's policy doesn't allow paid reviews or incentives such as discounts or freebies, and it doesn't allow you to ask only happy customers or request specific wording. Reviews that break these rules can be removed. Ask every customer honestly, make it easy with a link or QR code, and reply to every review.

Can I have two listings in Gurugram?

Only if both are real, separate locations that are staffed and meet Google's guidelines. You can't create a second profile at the same address to target different keywords. If you have two genuine offices, give each one its own profile, its own phone number and its own page on your website, as we do for our DLF Phase 2 and Golf Course Road offices.

Does posting on Google Business Profile help ranking?

Be cautious of anyone who says posts directly boost rankings. What posts do is keep your profile current, show customers what you offer, and share updates such as holiday timings, which can help them choose you. Treat posts as part of a complete, accurate profile, not as a ranking trick.
